El Laboratori Químic de l’Ebre, precursor d'IQS, ha guanyat el Reconeixement com a Emplaçament Històric Representatiu de la Química en el Territori de Parla Catalana 2023, atorgat per la Societat Catalana de la Química. “Es tracta d’un reconeixement a la nostra història més que centenària”, en paraules del director general d’IQS-URL, Dr. Salvador Borrós. El Laboratori Químic de l'Ebre (LQE), germen de l’actual IQS, fou creat el 1905 per la Companyia de Jesús -al peu d'un turó a la localitat de Roquetes- amb l’objectiu de proporcionar a joves jesuïtes una formació química que conciliés la fe i la ciència. El seu fundador i primer director fou el Dr. Eduardo Vitoria SJ, que havia tornat de Lovaina on havia conclòs la seva tesi doctoral. El fet que el LQE oferís una formació pràctica que completava la formació de tipus teòric va atreure llicenciats i enginyers laics. Aquesta nova situació va revelar ben aviat que la ubicació de laboratori no era l’adequada i el 1916 les instal·lacions del laboratori es van traslladar a l’actual seu de Sarrià a Barcelona.
