El Shishapagma està situat al mig de la serralada de l’Himalaia, íntegrament en territori tibetà però administrat per la Xina des de l’any 1954, i és una de les 14 muntanyes que superen els 8.000 metres a tot el món. La primera vegada que es va coronar el cim va ser l’any 1964, una expedició xinesa formada per 10 alpinistes. El Shishapagma està cobert permanentment d’una capa de neu i glaç que amaga grans esquerdes i també es troben impressionants seracs en les glaceres que l’envolten.
